Healing with
CranioSacral Therapy
By Helen
Berger, CranioSacral Therapist, Kinesiologist and Physiotherapist
CranioSacral therapy is a subtle hands-on bodywork and energy
healing technique to help relax and unwind the CranioSacral
system.
The
CranioSacral system consists of membranes and cerebrospinal
fluid that surround and protect the central nervous system and
the spinal marrow. It stretches from the bones of the head
(the cranium) down the spine to the sacrum and the tailbone. The
cerebrospinal fluid moves within and around the central nervous
system, and creates a rhythm, called the ‘CranioSacral rhythm’.
This
rhythm can be picked up everywhere on the body, especially on
the bones of the head and at the sacrum. The rhythm gives
information about the health, functions and well-being of the
whole body.
CranioSacral Therapy considers the body as a whole – its entire
structure body, mind and spirit, and works together with the
self-healing capability of the body.
The Effects of CranioSacral Therapy
CranioSacral therapy helps improve general well-being, reduces
stress, increases energy and enhances the functioning of all the
body’s organs. It allows the body to unwind and release pain
and stress from physical and emotional traumas. It is hugely
beneficial for children and adults and is a non-intrusive
therapy.
The
therapy can treat many conditions such as headaches and
migraines, chronic neck and back pain, muscular pain, tensions,
whiplash, jaw problems, scoliosis, endocrine system imbalances,
depression, stress, sleeping disorders, tiredness and fatigue,
birth-trauma, motor skill difficulties, learning disabilities,
hyperactivity, ADD, hypersensitivity, cerebral palsy, autism,
etc.
So What Happens During a Session?
Using
gentle touch, the therapist connects to the connective tissue
and cerebrospinal fluid in the CranioSacral system.
The
CranioSacral rhythm and tensions in the tissues will guide the
therapeutic approach during the session. Following this
rhythm and the subsequent release of tensions in that specific
area creates pathways for healing. The session can work at both a structural and on an
emotional level, depending on the needs of the client.
Sessions
are carried out lying down fully clothed. A session lasts 1 -
1¼ hours for adults and usually about 45 minutes for children.
